Diatribe: Radio
2002-12-10 - In the afternoon

A moment of silence for the Western New York concert scene.

Today, we lost a legend.

Metropolitan Entertainment, the group that had previously been responsible for booking acts for the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center was sold to Clearchannel today.

What does this mean?

It means that the Clearchannel conglomerate now owns 1,225 radio stations (including at least 2 in Rochester), 37 television stations (at least one here in Rochester), has exclusive 95+ concert venues, including 45 large ampitheatre venes like the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center.

When you allow consolidation like that, there is only one result. Crap. The same crappy branded stations in every market, preventing a variety of music from getting on its airwaves.

I am thankful that I live in a city that recognizes the importance of independent radio stations like WBER.

*grrr*
