Good Eats
2002-07-22 - In the morning

Last Friday, /. (Slashdot) ran a book review. While not uncommon for it to do so, the weird part was that the book was a book about cooking. While out of character for /. to do a book review for a cooking book, I was rather entertained. This might be the first book I buy because of a /. book review.

The book in question is Alton Brown's I'm Just Here For The Food.

Avid TV Food Network viewers may know that Alton Brown is the host/star/genius behind the show Good Eats. Good Eats presents cooking in a humorous light, with more than just recepies. It will often talk about the "why" things work instead of just the "what works, what doesn't" aspects of cooking.

Last night, there was a special on the Food Network... Good Eats: Down & Out In Paradise, where the main idea is that Alton becomes stranded on a "deserted" tropical island, and is stuck having to survive by... cooking.

At one point, Alton finds an old Army supply box, in the bottom of which is a hand grenade. After an incident with a wild pig on the island, Alton decides that pork is in fact, Good Eats. The hand grenade gets used, and next thing you know, Alton has bits and pieces of pork, and is making sweet & sour pork. *hee hee*

I love the line that soon follows, Alton, talking to Willie (?), the inflatable sea creature he finds. "Fresh ingredients make all the difference. Of course, we're not going to have any more fresh ingredients because we're fresh out of hand grenades."

Other notes from me:

Turkey sausage. Low in fat, and oh so tasty. Take the turkey sausage (looks a lot like a kielbasa). Pour beers into a pot. Slice up a medium sized onion, and add to beer. Add sausage. Bring beer to a boil, then cover and simmer for about 12-15 minutes. Serve ala hot dogs, or by themselves with a little mustard, or top off with saeurkraut. Yum. That's good eats, in my opinion. Thanks to my friend Nate for leaving a few brewskis behind at my place on his last visit.
